FAQ for the 1940 Census Indexing Project

I want to pass along some important information about the 1940 Census indexing project. You may work on other states while waiting for your state to come up. Oregon is supposed to be released late in the first day, but it might be a challenge to log in. You may even want to download what you are working on and do it off line so the access will be more available to others. If you are not signed up for indexing please do so today.

With the release of the 1940 census being less than a week away, we wanted to reach out with answers to a couple of frequently asked questions:

1)   When will my state be available to index?
The best way to know if your state is available to index is to check the Current Projects page on the indexing website. Check back frequently to see if your state is posted. Remember, it may take up to two weeks to make all of the states available for indexing but some states will be completed within a matter of hours after release.

2)   Will I be able to index records at the county level?
No. Indexing will occur at the state level. With the complexity of the census, it is not possible to efficiently post records by county.

Thank you for your involvement in this monumental project!
