ICAPGen Renewal - My Activities 2020

Tonight there is a new page on this blog, ICAPGen Renewal Report 2020. This is not a perfect submission, but it is something that may help others in report writing. Below is the letter submitted covering my genealogy activities over the last five years. It has been an amazing ride and looking back is helpful in seeing where to go in the future. The serenditpity for me is that this is still something that I have a passion for doing. If you have ever considered applying for accreditation or certification, go for it! In the long run you will be a better genealogist and researcher.

Letter of Genealogical Activities 2015-2020                                                   20 May 2020
To the ICAPGen Renewal Review Board,

It is amazing to review the genealogical activities that I have been involved in over the last five years. Due to health issues there were some periods of time in which my activity was limited. Listed here is a synopsis of what that work encompasses.

Groups I am associated with:
·         Association of Professional Genealogists - International and State of Oregon. I meet monthly with a group of APG members to share our projects and learn from each other. The Oregon APG group meets quarterly and visit research sites within Oregon.
·         Genealogical Council of Oregon – this group folded in 2015.
·         Genealogical Forum of Oregon – This group provides the largest research facility in the state of Oregon. They provide many educational opportunities. I am a life member.
·         Daughters of the American Revolution – no longer active member.
·         New England Historic Genealogical Society – watch their webinars on New England Research. Do research using their online catalog and have access at the Family History Center locally.
·         ICAPGen – assist with testing as needed. They provide educational resources including webinars
·         UGA – no longer active member.
·         The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – The church provides many educational webinars, conferences and other resources for education. Rootstech provides online webinars.
·         Scappoose Historical Society and the Watts House in Scappoose, Oregon.
·         The Genealogical Society of Washington County, Oregon.
·         The Washington County Museum, Oregon.
·         Columbia County Museum Association, Columbia County Oregon.

My volunteer work includes:
Chapter Representative for Oregon APG. 2015-2019

Volunteered at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon 2015-present, member since 2002, now life member.
Contribute as a writer for the quarterly “Bulletin” publication for the Genealogical Forum of Oregon 2010-present. Proof reader for “The Insider” newsletter of GFO 2015-2019

Instructor at local family history fairs 2015-present, have been a presenter since 2002.
Family history consultant for LDS church 2015-present, having served most years since 1998.

Volunteered with the Genial Genealogists Group that meets monthly at the St. Helens, Oregon Public Library. Provided three presentations for them. Group began meeting in February 2018.

Volunteered with and helped to organize the Columbia County Historical Societies Group in
2017. We meet quarterly at one of the six participating groups museums for a discussion relative
to the operations of the museums.

Volunteered at the Scappoose Historical Society at the Watts’ house in Scappoose, Oregon from 2016 to 2019. Served as genealogist and one year as board member. This has been a major project of organizing the collections at the house and placing priceless documents, pictures and other artifacts in a safe and secure filing cabinet. Lists were created of the collections to assist researchers in discovering items of the people who lived in this area since 1846 and the Watts family specifically as they arrived in 1852 and took Donation Land Claims for this area. A database was created of the family and now holds 1,500 individuals and 483 marriages. Many of the families had inter-marriages and the database is helpful with other families who lived in the community.

My blog was first established in 2011. Pages include: Calendar, GFO Bulletin Articles, Lectures, Book Reviews Published, Book Wish List and FAQ. There are also seven major articles. This blog is publicly accessible, and includes work done for clients and my own family history. Over the past nine years there have been over 171,368 views and 117,868 in the past five years. There are many inquiries about the families listed. There are 357 posts, covering a variety of topics, including several for work on New England research.
Under lectures there is one specific lecture for New England Research
Researching Your New England Ancestors
Come discover the rich heritage of your ancestors in the wealth of resources found in the early records of the New England states. Learn how to perform a thorough research of the resources from your own home. Build a case for the ancestral lines you seek to establish.

Appeared on a local radio show with Melinda Bernert‎ to Concerned Citizens of Columbia County (otherwise known as 4C’s) August 10, 2019. Tomorrow's topic on Setting the Record Straight: the ins and outs of genealogy, the ethics surrounding DNA testing and how to get started on your own family tree.
