1940 United States Federal Census
On April 2, 2012, NARA will provide access to the images of the 1940 United
States Federal Census for the first time. Unlike previous census years, images of the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be made available as free digital images. BUT NOT indexed.
Upon its release, FamilySearch.org and its partners will coordinate efforts
to provide quick access to these digital images and immediately start indexing these records to make them searchable online for free and open access.
Full, Free Access Is Coming!

The Dec 2011 edition of the APG Quarterly has an excellent write-up of Steve
Morse's finder and the 1940 census in general (pages 238-246).
