Recipe Boxes and the Stories They Tell

In going through my mother's things my latest adventure was delving into her recipe box. The contents surprised me as there are recipes from many of her friends, but the biggest surprise was that she had incorporated her collection into my sister's recipe box from our junior high school days. The collection of my sister is very similar to my collection created as a project with the same teacher from 1966-1968.

For some time now my recipe box sat on my office desk, with the hopeful intent of typing the recipes for sharing with my family. Since mine is a little better organized it is the one that will be included here. There twenty-five index tabs and on each of them is a list of the recipes found behind them. Just for fun this will be a listing of the recipes by order and title. If you find one that you would like to try, let me know and it will be sent to you.

A Recipe for All Good Cooks

Some quick observations about the recipes found in my box. First of all there are no recipes under fish and seafoods; foreign foods; fruits; jams, jellies and preserves; outdoor cooking; and poultry. There is only one under appetizers; frozen foods; sandwiches and snacks and two under pickles and relishes. Over the years there were many recipes used from these categories, but not put in the recipe box. The categories with the most recipes are sweets and deserts. Main dishes, meat dishes and salads are also well represented. As a young teen my interests were focused on these. Now as a mother and grandmother my focus has changed to include a more balanced diet.

In our family we generally cook without recipes, often creating concoctions from what we have on hand. Some of our family favorites need to be written down so we can pass them on to future generations. My mother made wonderful deviled eggs and my version is pretty close. She would bring these to our family events and they disappeared quickly.

What family favorite recipes do you need to record for your posterity? It is part of our family legacy that can be easily overlooked. Be sure to capture the favorite recipes of those ancestors and share them with others.
